John 3:16

For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD: God does love this world, but it does not mean that He approves of the way man lives. God hates wickedness, but God still wants happiness for all men. God hates sin, but God loves all sinners. A parent will love his child, but like God, a parent will hate the conduct of their child when they do wrong.

God loved the world and all mankind. He showed this love by sending His only Son to die for it. The world was in ruin and God’s wrath was upon it. All people were living in a hopeless condition. God gave His Son, it was an undeserved gift from God. He gave him up to extreme suffering and pain, the pain of death on the cross for mankind of the world. Christ was the propitiation for our sins. I John 2:2 and he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the world.

THAT HE GAVE: This gift that God gave was free and man did not deserve it, but God saw fit to give His only son into the hands of man to die in their stead. God gave His only son that sinners should not perish.

HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON: John 1:14, And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

This is the highest expression of love that anyone can receive. This love showed the depth of God’s love for mankind. God was willing to give His only son into the hands of men (sinful men) that He might be slain for our sins. In doing so it would free men from eternal death and sorrow. I John 3:1, Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us.

THAT WHOSOEVER BELIEVETH IN HIM SHOULD NOT PERISH: Believing in Christ and the gospel to be the true word of God will lead to our obedience. Hearing the truth and believing, we will repent of our sins, confess Christ and be baptized.

BUT HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE: This everlasting life will come in the end if we remain faithful. We read in Rev. 2:10, that we will be tempted by the devil and suffer tribulation, but if we remain faithful unto death we will receive a crown of life. Our reward will be a home in Heaven for eternity.
